According to his biography, Escher was a composer of villotte in Italy, and specifically for choirs, so it is likely that he wrote these for choirs. Mr. Macchi's arrangement says "arm. M. Macchi". It is unclear what the nature of the harmonization is that would be different from Escher's original.
