Written for the funeral of Magnus Lemche, a singer and friend of the composer. Ludolf Nielsen also made a version for voice, piano (or organ), violin (ad lib.).

HMB has instrumentation voice, violin ad libitum, and piano or organ (Monatsbericht (1916), p.58.)
