According to Cobbett/Altmann the hero of the second movement was Kaun's friend, Captain von Gossel of the SS Elbe, which was involved in a collision while crossing the North Sea at 5.30 am on January 31st 1895 and sank with the loss of more than 300 passengers and crew

Kaun-Verzeichnis gives the first publisher as Berlin : Rich. Rühle, 1898.
