Written in the middle of the 2020-2022 Covid-19 Pandemic String Quartet No.8 (Vita Oscura) is divided in four movements. The first movement opens with a short, rather pensive introduction, and continues in a self-assured and rather meandering mood that is only occasionally questioned by some ominous low register cello playing, and brief reappearances of the introductory material. The second movement, sub-titled Covid-19, starts with a strange, alien pizzicato (the players pluck the strings, as in normal pizzicato, but they do so under the bridge of the instruments where pitch is indeterminate), that is interrupted and is followed by more serene high register open chords and glissandos. The movement develops and reaches a climax before being erased by the return of the alien plucking. The third movement is marked Funeral March and represents a stopping point, things come close to an end in its middle and come to a standstill by its end. The fourth movement is the fastest. The image associated with it is not so much one of a return to life, but one instead of endurance, perhaps defiance when faced with the obscurity of life.
