Atterberg's seventh symphony is based to a large extent on his opera Fanal (1929–1934). Originally the symphony was written with four movements, but Atterberg decided to remove the fourth after the premiere. The deleted fourth movement was later reworked into Vittorioso, Op.58. Atterberg later stated that Vittorioso could be used as a fourth movement to this symphony, but the three-movement version was preferred.
More insights into the genesis of this work can be found in the 2015 paper The revised versions of Kurt Atterberg’s symphonies by author Carola Finkel.
