Tempo indications
Brian would have been nowhere near the only composer to improvise in other languages but I'm not sure if he did in fact do so-- since I don't know Italian and in fact do have to ask- is "Moderato allegro mais brio molto" Italian? (the mais looks more French.) (movement 4, rehearsal 126- beginning of the last track of the 4th movement on Lenard's recording on Naxos/Marco Polo btw..., and similarly a bit before.) - There are numerous examples of Brian using the French “mais” in this score, usually in the middle of a direction otherwise entirely consisting of Italian; I don’t think there’s one which combines Italian, French and English. Elsewhere in this piece he does use the Italian “ma” so it can’t have been from ignorance; carelessness probably (and the editors at Cranz weren’t inclined to editorialise).
