Baker's Biographical Dictionary (1905 and 1919) mention a publication date of 1888. Wikipedia citing Appletons' Cyclopædia of American Biography cite a date of 1860 (publication or composition?). Multiple sources report that the work received the praise of William Sterndale Bennett (d.1875). Its premiere may have occurred at the 1888 Chicago convention of the Music Teachers National Association under the direction of Theodore Thomas.
