Extra Information The earliest manuscript is for piano solo, dated January 1870 (see above). The work was arranged by composer for orchestra, military band, 2 pianos-8 hands, 2 pianos* and piano duet. Taken from La Délivrance, a patriotic cantata composed for a planned concert during the Siege of Paris, the first performance was given in the setting for 2 pianos. The intended primary setting was for orchestra even though the work was not orchestrated for almost 2 years. Ratner's catalogue classifies it as an orchestral work. Durand published the 8-hand arrangement in 1881. Publication dates from Sabina Teller-Ratner, Camille Saint-Saëns, 1835-1921: The instrumental works, pp.278–81.
