These 5 preludes were written when I was in a particularly improvisatory mood and was really into Scriabin. So they have some things in common with each other and with Scriabin's music. Most of Prelude 5 was written years later. I was looking through some manuscripts and discovered the first few phrases were all that I had written. I had tossed them off without ever trying them out on the piano. I thought they were worth something, so I finished it, and quintupled its length in the process. Then I re-examined Preludes 1 and 4. I thought Prelude 1 might sound interesting if it were completely pentatonic. The original Prelude 4 was the slow version. I tried it out with staccato and extremely fast and some other changes in interpretation and settled on that being the official version. I also added a few notes and measures to some of the other preludes and decided to collect them into a set and call them all preludes.
