Written for the Royal Cathedral Choir (Königlicher Domchor) in Berlin; numbers 1, 2, 4, and 6 were first performed by them on the above-mentioned holy days in 1843-44.

One may surmise that the unusual order of the pieces (not corresponding to the liturgical calendar) in the Breitkopf&Härtel and Peters editions follows the first edition.
