Extra Information
|
The original version of 1912 featured complete incidental music for the Molière play Le Bourgeois gentilhomme in Hofmannsthal's German adaptation Der Bürger als Edelmann, followed by the one act opera Ariadne auf Naxos. This proved to be quite impractical with a total performance time of over 6 hours. The revised version of 1916 replaced the incidental music with a shorter "Vorspiel" to precede the opera itself. This is the version most often performed today.
