Navigation etc.

  • First published in 1578 in Il Primo Libro de Balli (Mainerio, Giorgio): Venice.
  • Interestingly, the version in Mainerio is 4-part instrumental ensemble, whereas the 1583 version is organ tablature. Grove Music says of Mainerio's Primo Libro de Balli that "Several of the dances later appeared anonymously (in RISM 1583²¹) and organ intabulations of the Pass'e mezzo antico and other dances were published by Jakob Paix (RISM 1583²³)." Of Paix, Grove Music says "Paix apparently borrowed dances from Phalèse's Chorearum molliorum collectanea (RISM 1583¹²) and Mainerio's Primo libro de balli (Venice, 1578)." This leaves open the possibility that Paix simply arranged Mainerio's dances, and cannot be credited as having composed them. Since IMSLP has scans of neither original, this is a mystery to be solved at a later date. But possibly, this page has to go under Mainerio's name with the keyboard version as an arrangement, and the instrument tagging is also subject to correction.
