"basso" in the classical period was generally a synonym for cello, or at least for non-solo cello. See the title pages of Mozart's and Haydn's earlier string quartets, for example, which are generally agreed to be for 2 violins, viola and cello but where the title page most certainly specifies "basso" as well.

Correction: the part was taken, according to Leopold Mozart (see the preface to the NMA edition), by Cassl (Joseph Thomas Cassel), court double-bassist, at an early performance, so- double-bass, not cello and not open bass. (From a letter of 13 April 1778 of Leopold Mozart to his son, quoted in the preface to NMA edition 167.)
