La vida appears as an instrumental symphonic poem, or 7th major symphony, in the list of works published by Juan Luís Estelrich together with the discourse (entitled Biographical Symphony in four movements) when Marquès was proclaimed the illustrious son of Palma. It is said that it is a symphonic poem in three movements with an introduction: Allegro, Adagio and Funeral March. However, the maestro Marquès must have reworked it later, because the originals in the Partituroteca of the University of the Balearic Islands show that Marquès subtitled this work "instrumental symphonic poem" and that it is composed of 5 movements: 1, Andante un poco lento; 2, Adagio non molto; 3, Allegro agitato; 4, Allegro vivace scherzando molto leggiero; 5, Funeral march. La vida was never premiered, but when Maestro Marquès died on 25 February 1918, Jaume Albertí i Ferrer, with the help of some collaborators, orchestrated the funeral march of the 5th movement in one night so that the band of the 61st Palma Infantry Regiment, conducted by José Balaguer, could play it the next day at the Maestro's burial. That same year of 1918, the Palma Infantry Regiment performed this march in the Holy Thursday procession. There are later references to the fact that this funeral march was usually played in concert, in particular by the Music Band of the Palma Infantry Regiment, renumbered 36 after the Francoist coup in 1936. It was also performed by the Symphony Orchestra of Mallorca (now the Symphony Orchestra of the Balearic Islands) on the 28th of February 1951, conducted by the Korean maestro Ekitai Ahn, in a tribute concert to the memory of Maestro D. José Balaguer, the founder and honorary director of the Symphony Orchestra. The program for this concert states: "This funeral march by the popular Mallorcan musician, which is part of his 'Seventh Symphony', was premiered by Maestro Balaguer with his Military Band at the burial of its author and is included in this program in memory of the extraordinary effort required from D. José Balaguer, such a delicacy". Many years later, it is recorded as having been played by the Music Band from Pollença, where it was probably taken by Jaume Albertí when he was conductor.
