Extra Information | *The work was originally composed for a benefit concert after the loss of RMS Titanic on 14 April 1912. Nielsen drafted a short score in pencil with a few indications on the instrumentation which he then left to Julius Reesen to complete. Reesen's score was finished on 18 May. The concert was cancelled, however, and the music was not performed until three years later. Though Nielsen based his paraphrase on Lowell Mason's hymn tune (Bethany), it is unlikely the band of the Titanic would have been familiar with it as the most popular musical setting of the text in England at the time was composed by John Bacchus Dykes. |
