Both rhapsodies for bassoon and cor anglais were composed in quick succession, based on the same spontaneous design, with short solo improvisational hinge-like center pieces, that split each work in two parts, each part being introduced by the same individualistic thematic material, developed differently up to their codalike conclusions.
