Extra Information * The initial publication appears to have been in New Music Quarterly, Vol.5 No.2 (January 1932). The work (in full or in part) was reissued in New Music Orchestra Series, No.5-2, but the publication year is not printed on the score(s), cover, or catalog page; presumbly it was published in the 1932-33 timeframe, since No.5 (3 Songs by Ruth Crawford) and No.6 (Fugue for 8 Percussion Instruments by William Russell) were both published in 1933.

Navigation etc.

  • The string parts in no.1 are listed in the plural, those in no.2 are listed in the singular.
  • In no.2, though the instrumentation on the first page is as listed above, there is an instruction at rehearsal letter O for the clarinet to play "8va ad lib., if more than 2 Violins or if Flute is playing here with 1st Violin", 2 bars later "Clar. lower notes if Fl. plays", and 1 bar later, "[no trombone]".
  • The last page of the score has some good information on the history of theatre orchestras, and suggestions for substitutions of instruments.
