New Music Edition

History

New Music Edition originated as the New Music Society of California, based in San Francisco, devoted to publishing "ultra-modern" classical compositions that other music publishers of the time might not have agreed to publish. The organization was founded by Henry Cowell in 1925, and the first issue of the New Music quarterly published in October 1927.

In 1932, New Music Edition began to publish New Music Orchestra Series, which as its name implies, had more focus on orchestral works. It was originally intended to be a quarterly to supplement New Music, but due to various factors, financial and otherwise, the series was not a regular quarterly publication and it was discontinued in 1939.

Publication of the New Music quarterly continued until July 1958, when the company was acquired by Theodore Presser.

Notes:

  • New Music quarterly issues are listed first in the table, in order of publication. They have format V/N, where V is the volume number, and N is the issue number within that volume. Issues were published in October, January, April, and July, with number 1 corresponding to an October issue, and number 4 corresponding to the July issue in the following calendar year.
  • New Music Orchestra Series issues are listed next in the table. They have format OS N, where N is a number, sometimes containing a hyphen.
  • New Music Special Editions are listed last in the table. They have one of two formats: D N, where N is a number, or Special. This corresponds to how the editions are documented by Mead (see Sources section) or by how they are listed in New Music Edition catalogue pages.
