Navigation etc.

Hildegard of Bingen’s musical works are principally found in two 12th century manuscripts.

  • The Wiesbaden or Riesencodex Hs.2 contains all but two of Hildegard’s compositions; the omissions are the psalm antiphon “O frondens virga” and the votive antiphon “Laus Trinitati”. This manuscript is dated slightly later and was started under the supervision of Hildegard, but its completion postdates her death in 1179.
  • The Dendermonde or Villarenser Codex Ms. 9. contains 57 of Hildegard’s compositions (several incomplete) including the two works mentioned above (a facsimile of this codex has been published, and scans are to be found here but is not currently included on IMSLP). This manuscript was inscribed during Hildegard’s lifetime and possibly included some of the additional works found only in the Riesencodex (two works break off abruptly at the end of a folio, and a third work is missing its beginning).

Other recordings

  • The Complete Hildegard von Bingen: Volume 1, 2 & 3 : Stevie Wishart & Sinfonye [1]

Other online editions

  • The Symphonia and Ordo Virtutum of Hildegard von Bingen at the International Society of Hildegard von Bingen Studies. Edition of each piece in the Symphonia includes the text and translation, a musical transcription (in PDF) and recording, commentary, and further resources. As of May, 2015, the edition includes the first 33 pieces, following the order in Barbara Newman's edition (BN in the table below).
