Publication History

This rarely performed work was subject to multiple arrangements by the composer. Originally written for violin solo, harps, timpani, winds, and double bass (Ricordi, Pl. no. N 40441 N., 1865), Gounod compressed the texture to violin, piano, and organ. Later, Gounod would replace the violin with a high soprano singing to the text of the "Ave verum corpus" (c. 1878).
