History
Founded in 1793 by Nicolaus Simrock (1751-1832) in Bonn. A Paris branch was opened in 1802 by Nicolas' son Heinrich (Henri). Another son, Peter Joseph Simrock (1792-1868), opened a branch in Cologne and took over management of the firm after Nicolaus' death in 1832. Peter's son Friedrich August "Fritz" inherited the firm in 1868 and moved the principal office to Berlin in 1870. A subsidiary in Leipzig was established in 1904, and agencies were set up in London, Paris and New York at about the same time. Simrock absorbed the firm Bartholf Senff in 1907, but was itself sold to the firm Anton J. Benjamin in 1929. After WW II, the firm's ownership was returned to heirs of the Schauer family (owners of Benjamin), who still employ the Simrock imprint as part of their Benjamin-Rahter-Simrock division.
Plate Numbers
Note: When the Bartholff Senff catalog was absorbed in 1907, Simrock incorporated the Senff plate numbers by adding a numeral in front of the older number, where possible. A Simrock plate number higher than 20000 will probably be a re-issue of a Senff plate, for example, Simrock 21234 is likely to be a re-issue of Senff 1234.
