The date of first publication so far remains unclear as it is not indicated in the score.
According to Hofmeister's Monatsberichte Kern's Orgelmagazin. Vor- und Nachspiele für die Orgel consisted of 6 volumes (Op.233 (volumes 1 and 2), Op.269 (vol.3), Op.270 (vol.4), Op.271 (vol.5), and Op.272 (vol.6)). See Monatsbericht (1891), p.182 and Monatsbericht (1896), p.18. The score for Op.224 identifies itself as Heft 2 so perhaps the Monatsberichte erred in assigning both volumes 1 and 2 to Op.233. Or, perhaps in their listing Op.233 was an error for Op.223 (the score of which has been uploaded as Heft 1 of Orgelmagazin). Op.224 does not appear in any of the Hofmeister publications.
