Each piece in this opus is a single-movement serenade, similar to the many other serenades Gouvy wrote for solo piano. These serenades were preceded by 3 Sérénades, Op.39, published in 1865, and were followed by the 19th and 20th serenades, published in 1878 as 2 Sérénades, Op.64.
