History

Julien Hamelle (1836-1917) purchased the Paris publisher Jacques Maho (founded 1851) in 1877 and expanded the catalogue with the works of notable French composers of the era - including those of Debussy, Faure, Franck, D'Indy, Pierne, Saint-Saens, and Widor. Hamelle was unusual for a French publisher in that he often employed the engraving services of the Leipzig firm C.G. Röder, while the majority of his French competitors used local engravers. After his death in 1917, the firm continued operation under his children. In 1921, Georges-Edgar Hamelle (1868-1956) became the new leader of the firm. In 1977 Leduc took over the distribution of the Hamelle catalogue and from 1993 on the firm was entirely run by Leduc.
