Hino nacional brasileiro (Silva, Francisco Manuel da)

Authorship Note
Silva's Hino nacional brasileiro was a hymn-refrain composition from ca.1830. It received various lyrics during the 19th century, as was common for this musical form, often related to special commemorations. It gained popularity at aristocratic events and was frequently used in celebrations of the monarchy (hino de facto). Its popularity led it to be chosen as the national anthem, without lyrics, by the Republican regime in 1890. New lyrics by Duque-Estrada were officially adopted in 1922, and official instrumental versions by Miguez, Pinto Júnior, Republicano, and Fernandes were established in 1936 and 1942 (see General Information section below).

Extra Information [*] In the beginning of the 20th century, Alberto Nepomuceno (1864–1920), using his political influence, advocated for a reform of the Brazilian anthem. He adapted the melodic line of Silva's original composition (officially recognized as national anthem in 1890, Decreto No.171/90), gave promotion to the inclusion of new lyrics to it and proposed a regulation of its performances. Duque-Estrada's lyrics were written in 1909 and officially adopted in 1922 (Decreto No.15671/22).
