Performed twice in the 1820s (the second time conducted by Berlioz himself, in St-Eustache on 22 November 1827), aside from the revised version of the Resurrexit, the parts and vocal scores of the Messe solennelle were destroyed by Berlioz, and the autograph manuscript of the full score given to a Belgian violinist and thought to be lost. The full score was only rediscovered in an organ gallery in Antwerp in 1991, and the work first published in the New Berlioz Edition in 1994, following the first modern performances and recordings late in 1993.
