recorded by the Artis Quartet on a Nimbus CD (as of 2011 the only commercial recording of any of Wellesz' quartets; also includes the 6th quartet, and the posthumously published 3rd. Edit: no longer only: in 2025 the Aron Quartet on cpo has begun what looks to be a cycle beginning with a disc of Wellesz' quartets 2, 5 and 7.)
Possibly premiered by the Kolisch Quartet at some point during 1920; they played it in London that year.
An inventory of the music library of one of Paul Hindemith's residences (in Switzerland) included this work among others.
