Misc. Comments
Pictures at an Exhibition was composed originally for piano. The only orchestration that is public domain in the US is the partial one prepared in 1891 by Rimsky-Korsakov's conducting and composition student Mikhail Tushmalov (1861-1896). This was published by Bessel that year and issued in a corrected version sometime after Tushmalov's death. Tushmalov's orchestration has been reprinted by Kalmus and is currently (August 2006) available for sale by them.
Ravel's orchestration includes: 3 Flutes (2 doubling Piccolo), 3 Oboes (3rd doubling English Horn), 2 Clarinets (in Bb and A), Bass Clarinet (in Bb and A), 2 Bassoons, Contrabassoon, Alto Saxophone in Eb, 4 Horns in F, 3 Trumpets in C, 3 Trombones, Tuba, Timpani, Triangle, Snare Drum, Whip, Ratchet, Cymbal, Bass Drum, Gong, Glockenspiel, (Tubular) Bells (Eb), Xylophone, Celeste, 2 Harps, Strings
