History

Music publishing firm operated by Auguste O'Kelly in Paris between 1872 and 1888. He belonged to a family of French musicians of Irish origin which included the composers Joseph O'Kelly (1828–1885) and George O'Kelly (1831–1914) and as such has one sentence devoted to him in Joseph's biography in the 1881 supplement to Fétis' Biographie universelle des musiciens: "Un frère de cet artiste, M. A. O'Kelly, est éditeur de musique à Paris."

The Irish artist Aloysius O'Kelly who was studying in Paris in the early 1870s is NOT related to this family.

Auguste O'Kelly's firm operated under the brand name "Au Magasin de Musique du Conservatoire", a company founded in 1794 and originally an imprint for the Paris Conservatory. His predecessors included Célèste Cendrier ("Mme. Cendrier"), Edme Saint-Hilaire and Émile Cellerin. When he gave up in late 1888 his business and most of his catalogue were taken over by Mackar & Noël, later Albert Noël only (until 1910). He also had short-time partnerships with Ikelmer (1874 only), Rouget in Toulouse (1874–84), Lissarrague in Versailles (1877 only) and J. Naus in Paris (1880-1).

Auguste O'Kelly was born on 13 July 1829 in Boulogne-sur-mer and died in Paris on 16 February 1900. For further information see O'Kelly's article at Wikipedia.

Composers in the catalogue included Albert Lavignac (1846–1916), Antoine Marmontel (1816–1898), Henri Duvernoy (1820–1906), Georges Mathias (1826–1910), Georges Pfeiffer (1835–1908), Alphonse Hasselmans (1845–1912), Théodore Lack (1846–1921) and Marie Jaëll (1846–1925). O'Kelly also published several series: École du Piano: Choix de Concertos des Maîtres. Premiers Solos, edited by Émile Decombes (50 volumes, 1875-1888), works for trombone and piano, edited by Paul Delisse (12 works, 1877), and Les Maîtres classiques du violon, edited by Jean Delphin Alard (56 works, 1863-1884).
