Misc. Comments
Chronology
The Sanctus of the Mass was originally written for SSSATB in 1724 for Christmas; it was revised for SSAATB in the process of copying into the P 180 manuscript. The Kyrie and Gloria of the Mass were originally written 1733 for the Dresden court; some theorize that the Kyrie was a “Trauer-Ode” for Augustus I, and the Gloria a Coronation piece for Augustus II. It is unknown when the Credo was written, however, the manuscript is on a very different kind of paper, and Kobayashi dates it to near the end of Bach’s life. Further evidence of it not being copied wholesale is that the “Et in unum Dominum” was revised to include a separate “Et incarnatus est” movement. Also, the appearance of the “bridge” between the “Confiteor” and “Et expecto” shows clear signs of being a new composition (as does the Adagio introduction to the Kyrie).
The Osanna and Agnus Dei are all verifiable parody movements, but the date of composition is unknown. As Stauffer points out (2003), Bach may have had even more ambitious plans for the “Dona nobis pacem”, but was unable to complete it, and this explicates the extra staves ruled in the manuscript.
