History

The publishing company Hal Leonard was founded in 1947 by Harold "Hal" Edstrom, and his brother Everett "Leonard" Edstrom who had previously run a successful swing band with the same name. They published their own arrangements of popular tunes for school bands. Hal Leonard is now a major publisher of educational and popular sheet music.

In 2018 Music Sales, owner of most famous classical imprints such as Novello, Coventry & Hollier, Ewer, Elkin & Co., Goodwin & Tabb , W. Paxton & Co., Chester and Hansen, etc, sold its printed music division to Hal Leonard, explaining the deal as follows: “Printed music has played a special role in the long history of Music Sales, but our direction of travel has been very clear in recent years as we continue the expansion of our portfolio of copyrights in all styles and genres across the world.” Hal Leonard now claims to be the world's biggest music publisher.
