Neue Gesamtausgabe, Band I. (pp.1-122) Vienna: Musikwissenschaftlicher Verlag, 1974*. URTEXT EDITION This "urtext" or "scholarly" (scientific) edition is in the public domain because it was published at least 25 years ago for most of the EU (20 years ago in Italy, 30 years ago in Poland) over 25 years ago for the former USSR. Such editions are also public domain in Canada because they fail to meet the minimum 'threshold of originality' to qualify for copyright as an 'adaptation'. They may not be public domain elsewhere. *Nowak's edition here was reprinted from Haas' edition of the 1930s (where the 1877 version appeared in score and parts). The engraving on this score clearly pre-dates the claim of 1974 by decades. Why this item would qualify for copyright in the United States is a complete mystery as there is nothing original of Nowak's to be found in it.

Misc. Notes
|
As with Nowak's edition of the 1877 version, Brosche's was reprinted from Haas' edition of the 1930s. The number of engraved plates is identical and apart from the correction of errors there seems to be no significant difference, as the 126-page engraving was reprinted. Again this edition fails to meet even a minimal standard as there's nothing original in it.

Misc. Notes
|
Double bass may replace cello. Linz version. Published in late 1942 (noted in Jan. 1943 issue). Schmalnauer's arrangement is PD-US due to the failure to register the work with the U.S. Copyright Office and failure to file an NIE. In the USA this work is most likely in the public domain because it was published without a compliant copyright notice or no renewal was found after a thorough search of the Catalog of Copyright Entries and it was apparently ineligible for "restoration" under GATT/TRIPS.
