Such editions are also public domain in Canada because they fail to meet the minimum 'threshold of originality' to qualify for copyright as an 'adaptation'. They may not be public domain elsewhere. Misc. Notes Editor's preface removed for copyright reasons. *Nowak's edition here was reprinted from Haas' edition of the 1930s (where the 1890 version appeared in score and parts). The engraving on this score clearly pre-dates the claim of 1955 by decades. Why this item would qualify for copyright in the United States is a complete mystery as there is nothing original of Nowak's to be found in it.

Misc. Notes This score is of the 1892 first edition of the Symphony and differs in many places from the Haas and Nowak versions usually heard in recordings. As musicologist Benjamin Korstvedt persuasively argues (in Bruckner Symphony No. 8, Cambridge Music Handbooks, Cambridge UP, 2000), the considerable number of additional tempo changes, especially in the finale, shed important light on performance practices at the time of the work's premiere. The first edition "explains how the music should go far more explicitly -- and in a musically compelling way -- than do Bruckner's manuscript scores of the 1890 and 1887 versions and the modern critical editions based on them [i.e. Haas and Nowak]."
