The song as it stands in its original form is a fragment. It has been completed by Reinhard van Hoorickx (1918-1997), who composed performing versions for many of Schubert's unfinished songs. The sketch has no text, and Hoorickx assigned to the work the poem "Lebenstraum", written by Gabriele von Baumberg (1766-1839), and first published in 1805. Hoorickx's completion has been recorded by Stephen Varcoe and Graham Johnson for the Hyperion label. There is also an instrumental version of the fragment for cello and piano that was recorded by Daniel Grosgurin and Ulrich Eisenlohr for the Naxos label.
