Misc. Comments
For the Second Sunday after Easter.
Commentary on the movements
- [Solo (Bass):] Ich bin ein guter Hirt. A motivically oriented aria characterized by the descending semiquavers in the upper parts.
- Aria (Alto): Jesus ist ein guter Hirt. One of the rare arias in Bach for Violoncello Piccolo, Bach here uses the unusual instrument to good effect, keeping the player very busy.
- Choral (Soprano): Der Herr ist mein getreuer Hirt. The melody is Allein Gott in der Höh sei Ehr.
- Recitativo (Tenor): Wenn die Mietlinge schlafen. Recitative with string accompaniment.
- Aria (Tenor): Seht, was die Liebe tut. The sweet parallels of the obbligato oboes and the rocking 9/8 time give this movement a warm, pastoral feel.
- Choral: Ist Gott mein Schutz und treuer Hirt. A plain chorale setting to the tune of Ist Gott mein Schild und Helfersmann.
