This “urtext” or “scholarly” (scientific) edition was published at least 25 years ago in Germany and thus is public domain in its country of origin. Such editions are also public domain in Canada because they fail to meet the minimum ‘threshold of originality’ to qualify for copyright as an ‘adaptation’. Commentary on the movements

  1. Chorus: Christen, ätzet diesen Tag. A large-scale festive chorus, using the four trumpets (!) to great effect.
  2. Recitativo (Alto): O selger Tag! Recitative with string accompaniment.
  3. Aria (Soprano, Bass): Gott, du hast es wohl gefüget. An aria with obbligato oboe, which was replaced with organ in later (Leipzig) revivals.
  4. Recitativo (Tenor): So kehret sich nun heut. Secco recitative.
  5. Aria (Alto, Tenor): Ruft und fleht den Himmel an. A da capo duet aria using standard "duet" techniques.
  6. Recitativo (Basses): Verdoppelt euch demnach. Recitative with oboes and strings.
  7. Chorus: Höchster, schau in Gnaden an. Also highly festive, a movement finishing out the symmetry of this cantata.
