Commentary on the movements
Prima parte
- Chorus: Die Elenden sollen essen. A slow-fast French Overture-like movement.
- Recitativo (Bass): Was hilft des Purpurs Majestät. Recitative with string accompaniment.
- Aria (Tenor): Mein Jesus soll mein alles sein. Aria with strings and oboes. The tenor entry is on a "decidedly vocal 'motto'"1. Also, this could perhaps be a polonaise.
- Recitativo (Tenor): Gott stürzet und erhöhet. Secco recitative.
- Aria (Soprano): Ich nehme mein Leiden. A "minuet"-like aria with obbligato oboe d'amore.
- Recitativo (Soprano): Indes schenkt Gott ein gut Gewissen. Secco recitative.
- Choral: Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan. A more generous chorale setting than usual, with much independent writing.
Seconda parte
- Sinfonia. A sinfonia for trumpet and strings. However, the composition is really just a chorale arrangement again.
- Recitativo (Alto): Nur eines kränkt. Recitative with string accompaniment.
- Aria (Alto): Jesus macht mich geistlich reich. A "quasi-passepied"1. The obbligato here is unison violins.
- Recitativo (Bass): Wer nur in Jesu bleibt. Secco recitative.
- Aria (Bass): Mein Herze glaubt und liebt. The trumpet here has a juicy concertante part in the final aria.
- Recitativo (Tenor): O Armut, der kein Reichtum gleicht! Secco recitative.
- Choral: Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan. A more generous chorale setting than usual, with much independent writing.
