Misc. Comments
For the 1st Sunday in Advent,
Commentary on the movements
- Chorale: Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland. "The most splendid movement in the cantata"1. A typical Bach chorale setting from this cycle; the chorale melody is sung plain by the sopranos, while the rest of the voices and instruments play in imitation on a related motive.
- Aria (Tenor): Bewundert, o Menschen, dies grosse Geheimnis. Another usage of the choral in this movement, a pure expression of joy.
- Recitativo (Bass): So geht aus Gottes Herrlichkeit und Thron. Secco recitative.
- Aria (Bass): Streite, siege, starker Held! A very sparse texture of continuo with strings at the octave; note that the common time signature contrasts with the bouncy 3/8 of the first aria.
- Recitativo (Soprano, Alto): Wir ehren diese Herrlichkeit. Recitative with string accompaniment.
- Choral: Lob sei Gott, dem Vater, ton. A plain chorale setting.
