Misc. Comments
For the 25th Sunday after Trinity
Commentary on the movements
- [Chorale]: Du Friedefürst, Herr Jesu Christ. A "peaceful" but energetic opening chorus in Bar form. Instead of polyphony in the chorus, the chorale is sung with an independent instrumental texture, enlivened by the lively violin movement.
- Aria (Alto): Ach, unaussprechlich ist die Not. This anguished aria, oboe d'amore and all, combines polyphony and speech-like vocal declamation to heighten the emotional impact to a higher order.
- Recitativo (Tenor): Gedenke doch, o Jesu. Secco recitative, more decorated than most.
- Terzetto (Soprano, Tenor, Bass): Ach, wir bekennen unsre Schuld. One of very few trios in Bach's cantatas (viz. BWV 38). The only accompaniment is continuo, but the imitation is enough to maintain a rich trio texture.
- Recitativo (Alto): Ach, laß uns durch die scharfen Ruten. Recitative with string accompaniment.
- Choral: Erleucht auch unser Sinn und Herz. A plain chorale setting.
