Section Listing

  1. [Chorale]: Du Friedefürst, Herr Jesu Christ. A "peaceful" but energetic opening chorus in Bar form. Instead of polyphony in the chorus, the chorale is sung with an independent instrumental texture, enlivened by the lively violin movement. A Major
  2. Aria (Alto): Ach, unaussprechlich ist die Not. This anguished aria, oboe d'amore and all, combines polyphony and speech-like vocal declamation to heighten the emotional impact to a higher order. f minor
  3. Recitativo (Tenor): Gedenke doch, o Jesu. Secco recitative, more decorated than most. A Major-E Major
  4. Terzetto (Soprano, Tenor, Bass): Ach, wir bekennen unsre Schuld. One of very few trios in Bach's cantatas (viz. BWV 38). The only accompaniment is continuo, but the imitation is enough to maintain a rich trio texture. E Major
  5. Recitativo (Alto): Ach, laß uns durch die scharfen Ruten. Recitative with string accompaniment. c minor-A Major
  6. Choral: Erleucht auch unser Sinn und Herz. A plain chorale setting. A Major
