Misc. Comments
For the 10th Sunday after Trinity.
Commentary on the movements
- Chorus: Schauet doch und sehet, ob irgend ein Schmerz sei. A "large-scale lament"1 exploiting all of the baroque illustrative materials available to Bach. Imitation and polyphony abound.
- Recitativo (Tenor): So klage du, zerstörte Gottesstadt. A fully orchestrated recitative, with recorders providing a throbbing background to the string harmony and tenor declamation.
- Aria (Bass): Dein Wetter zog sich auf von weiten. The centerpiece of the cantata. The trumpet obbligato gives an especially festive character to this movement.
- Recitativo (Alto): Doch bildet euch, o Sünder, ja nicht ein. Secco recitative.
- Aria (Alto): Doch Jesus will auch bei der Strafe. Instrumentationally, this movement is a good contrast to the first aria: recorders instead of trumpets, alto instead of bass. The continuo is notably absent; this is a bassetto movement, with oboes as the bass.
- Choral: O großer Gott von Treu. A plain chorale setting with added recorders.
