Misc. Comments
For the Sunday after Christmas.
Commentary on the movements
- [Chorale]: Das neugeborne Kindelein. A "strikingly brief and compact" opening chorus, full of the sounds of oboes and violins in unison1. The structure is not as imitative as many others of Bach.
- Aria (Bass): O Menschen, die ihr täglich sündigt. A continuo aria "impassioned, chromatically tormented" throughout.
- Recitativo (Soprano): Die Engel, welche sich zuvor. Recitative with three recorders.
- Aria[ + Chorale] (Soprano, Tenor, Alto): Ist Gott versöhnt und unser Freund. Soprano and tenor sing free material around the alto cantus firmus while the bass continuously plays an ostinato rhythmic pattern.
- Recitativo (Bass): Dies ist ein Tag, den selbst der Herr gemacht. Recitative with string accompaniment.
- Choral: Es bringt das rechte Jubeljahr. A plain chorale setting.
