For an unknown funeral.
"A work of genius such as even great masters seldom achieve ... The Actus Tragicus belongs to the great musical literature of the world".1
Section Listing
- Sonatina. A slow, subdued opening movement; highly expressive, and highly beautiful. E♭ Major
- Movement in multiple parts:
- Chorus: Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit. An expressive opening chorus replete with text-painting. E♭ Major-c minor
- Arioso (Tenor): Ach, Herr, lehre uns bedenken. A chaconne with the full instrumental ensemble. c minor
- Aria (Bass): Bestelle dein Haus; denn du wirst sterben. Unison recorders are the only obbligato here; however, the writing is anything but ascetic. Virtuoso figurations abound. c minor-f minor
- Chorus: Es ist der alte Bund. The Alto, Tenor and Bass sing a fugue; the soprano interrupts with continuo alone. Then, an instrumental version of Ich hab mein Sach Gott heimgestellt is played. The sequence is repeated four times in total, however the repetitions each become shorter and more intense. Eventually the three components of the movement are superimposed upon each other. f minor
- Movement in multiple parts:
- Aria (Alto): In deine Hände befehl ich meinen Geist. Another chaconne-type movement, with viola da gambas obbligato. b♭ minor
- Arioso (Bass) & Choral (Alto): Heute wirst du mit mir im Paradies sein. A continuo aria again full of imitation; the alto here interrupts with Mit Fried und Freud ich fahr dahin. A♭ Major-c minor
- Chorus: Glorie, Lob, Ehr und Herrlichkeit. A plain chorale setting followed by a vivacious fugue on the last line of the chorale. E♭ Major
