Misc. Comments
For the 17th Sunday after Trinity.
Commentary on the movements
- Chorus: Wer sich selbst erhöhet, der soll erniedriget werden. The "focal point" of the cantata1, a gigantic fugue preceded by an instrumental ritornello. g minor
- Aria (Soprano): Wer ein wahrer Christ will heißen. The longest movement by far at almost 10 minutes. The obbligato is for an unlabelled instrument, which is today considered to be an organ in the original version. However, in the 1730s version, Bach changed the obbligato to violin. At any rate, the part is extremely difficult, and proves impressive on either. d minor
- Recitativo (Bass): Der Mensch ist Kot, Stank, Asch und Erde. Recitative with string accompaniment. g minor-E♭ Major
- Aria (Bass): Jesu, beuge doch mein Herze. The contrasting timbres of solo violin and oboe in imitation are the obbligato in this aria. The movement itself is a beautiful, more relaxed movement, that bears comparison with the previous movements. E♭ Major
- Choral: Der zeitlichen Ehrn will ich gern entbehrn. A "curiously" plain chorale setting1.g minor
